Cosmetic surgery

Aesthetic plastic surgery involves techniques intended for the enhancement of appearance through surgical and medical techniques, and is specifically concerned with maintaining normal appearance, restoring it, or enhancing it beyond the average level.

Nearly 12 million cosmetic procedures were performed in 2007 in the United States alone, with the five most common surgeries being breast augmentation, liposuction, nasal surgery, eyelid surgery and abdominoplasty.

Reconstructive surgery
Reconstructive plastic surgery is performed to correct functional impairments caused by burns; traumatic injuries, such as facial bone fractures and breaks; congenital abnormalities, such as cleft palates or cleft lips; developmental abnormalities; infection and disease; and cancer or tumors. Reconstructive plastic surgery is usually performed to improve function, but it may also be done to approximate a normal appearance.

Cohesive gel breast implants have the feel and consistency of real breast tissue due to the silicone compounds used to produce the gel product. They are composed of the same ingredients as standard silicone gel implants but the gel has a higher cohesivity that allows the natural shape to be maintained.

For over 25 years, silicone-gel filled breast implants have been used in more than 60 countries. Silicone gel implants have been used in the United States for breast reconstruction surgery for decades.

What is a study and do I qualify for the study group?

New medical products or drugs require approval from the FDA before making products available for general use. Studies enlist a group of subjects, in this case women who want breast implants, to have the treatment/device/medication on an experimental basis and then follow participants for a specified period of time.

There are several criteria that must be met to qualify for the 410 cohesive gel implants. To participate a patient must:

  • Be 18 years of age or older;
  • Have had or going to have a mastectomy due to breast cancer or require a replacement of existing implants;
  • Agree to participate in this study for 10 years;
  • Not be pregnant or nursing;
  • Not have an abscess or any type of infection at the time of enrollment;
  • Not have cardiac problems.
  • Other restrictions apply which can be communicated during the initial consultation. Patients who have been diagnosed with certain diseases might not be eligible to participate. Patients must have a consultation with Dr. Metlis to determine eligiblity for the study.
